What businesses are affected?

Commencing on 1 October 2011, new food laws in NSW require food businesses in the hospitality and retail food service sector to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS). Food Safety Supervisors must be trained by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Statewide Business Training is a NSW Food Authority approved RTO and has been delivering food handling units in a flexible and workplace based environment since 2002.

-  At least ONE Food Safety Supervisor is required per premises.

- Businesses that have more than one outlet must appoint a FSS per premises.

- Mobile caterers are not required to appoint a FSS for each location but must appoint at least one for the business.

Appointing a Food Safety Supervisor

A Food Safety Supervisor is a nominated representative of a food business that has undertaken the relevant qualifications provided by a Food Authority certified RTO and holds a FSS Certificate that is no more than 5 years old.

The FSS cannot be nominated for more than one food premises or any other mobile catering business.

The FSS must be a representative that holds the authority to supervise other people in the handling of food and ensures handling is done safely.

What is a Food Safety Supervisor?

Training that has be undertaken after 1 January 2007 may be recognised by the Food Authority.
